With Thanksgiving just around the corner, your kitchen — and your plumbing — are about to work overtime. Between turkey drippings, casseroles, potato prep, and nonstop dishwashing, Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest times of the year for plumbing problems across North Texas.
A little care now can prevent clogged drains, overloaded disposals, and even emergency calls during the holiday meal.
🦃 Keep grease OUT of the sink
Grease may look harmless when it’s hot, but as it cools, it solidifies inside your pipes, coating them like wax. Over time, it narrows the drain line until water can’t pass through.
Instead, pour grease into a can or jar and toss it once it hardens.
🥔 Skip the potato peels, eggshells, and stringy vegetables
These foods form a thick paste that your disposal can’t actually break down — and once they hit the drain line, they clump together and stop everything behind them.
If it’s fibrous, starchy, or gummy?
Trash, not disposal.
💧 Always run cold water with the disposal
Cold water keeps fats solid, allowing the disposal to grind them instead of smearing them along the inside of your pipes.
Run water for 10–15 seconds after turning the disposal off to clear the line.
🚫 On a septic system? Extra caution required.
Grease, fats, and heavy food waste do not break down well in septic tanks. Too much at once can strain the tank, disrupt the bacteria balance, or cause drainfield issues.
When in doubt, throw it out — not down the drain.
A little caution now can save a whole lot of trouble later.
But if Thanksgiving surprises you with a plumbing issue, Buckeroo and Gary will be on standby to help keep the holiday on track.
