Don’t Let Old Man Winter Freeze Your Pipes!
Get prepared for a hard Texas winter. December is a great time to prepare for January and February’s hard freezes. Winter’s chill can wreak havoc on your plumbing. Frozen pipes can burst, causing costly water damage and a major headache.
Here’s how to protect your pipes from the cold:
- Insulate Exposed Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes in insulation, especially those in unheated areas like attics, crawl spaces, and garages.
- Keep a Faucet Dripping: A slow drip of cold water can prevent pipes from freezing, especially during extremely cold weather.
- Seal Air Leaks: Seal any cracks or gaps around pipes where cold air can enter.
- If you have appliances, like dishwashers or clothes washers, against an outside wall, open the cabinet doors to let heat in.
