A clogged toilet is never fun, but knowing what not to do can save you from a messy disaster. Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when your toilet decides to stage a revolt:
DO:
- Stop Flushing: Resist the urge to flush repeatedly. This can make the overflow worse.
- Grab a Plunger: A good, flange-style plunger is your best friend in this situation. Make sure you have a good seal and plunge gently but firmly.
- Turn Off the Water: Locate the water shut-off valve behind the toilet and turn it clockwise to stop the water flow. This will prevent overflows.
DON’T:
- Use Chemical Drain Cleaners (Unless You’re Experienced): Harsh chemicals can damage your pipes and create dangerous fumes. If unsure, wait on a drain cleaning professional to use something specific to the clog.
- Flush Other Toilets in the House: If you suspect a main sewer line clog, flushing other toilets can worsen the backup and cause a plumbing disaster in your home.
- Panic! Take a deep breath, try the “DO’s” above. If they aren’t successful, call a professional!
